BY ROAD The park lies close to National Highway 8 and is bisected by the Waghai-Vansda State Highway. The nearest town is Waghai, 4km away. It is 28 km from Ahwa, 40 km from Billimora, and 60 km from Saputara. The area is easiest explored with a private vehicle, but public transport is available, though less convenient. There are buses from Surat, Billimora, and Valsad to Vansda village, and from there you can hire a jeep to the park for about Rs 50/- per person. There are no taxi operations close to Vansda, but you can also get a cab from Surat, Bilimora or Valsad. By ST bus, Ahwa, the district headquarters and on a plateau from which begins the ascenscion from Waghai to Saputara, is often the most convenient place to arrive in the Dangs.

BY RAIL The nearest railway station is Waghai. The narrow gauge rail link connecting Ahwa to Billimora runs through the park, but ask around to check if its still functioning when you come here.

BY AIR The nearest airport is in Surat, 120 km away.

History

Vansda National Park, a protected area representing the thick woodlands of the Dangs and southern Gujarat is situated in the Navsari District of Gujarat state, India.


The Vansda National Park had been declared protected region during April 1979 though it would have been well monitored since 1952. Today, this park is a major landmark in the region and truly protected area through the thick forestry from Dangs located in the southern part of India’s Gujarat state. Earlier this park was owned by former King of Vansda who gave it to the state government later on.


Presence of good number of adivasi settlements in Vansda is especially from those representing the Dangi tribes. The major ones are the Bhils, Gamit, Kunbi, Chowdry, Warli, Bhoi and Kukna amongst others.


Located in the Navsari district of South Gujarat region, Vansda national park has total 24 square kilometers area. Some interesting factors make this park unique like it forming a constant tract and the forestry regions of Valsad district in the southern side while those of the Dangs to its east make typical combination. In fact one has easy access to it from there instead of the Navsari area. The South Dangs Forest Division therefore monitors this park. This park was once owned by the King of Vansda who later handed it over to the state government.


This surging terrain is typical with part of it zigzagging while rest portion flat. In fact Ambika River nearby drains it into the sea at the very close distance to Navsari makes an effective look. The land developed by the Revenue Department borders this park on southwestern side while its northeastern border is Ambika. Northern and western limits of the Western Ghats are the name of the area which surrounds this park. Sahyadris is other name by which it is also denoted with.

It is not very large but the forests are very dense.


At places the vegetative cover is so thick that sunlight does not even penetrate through them and they remain engulfed in darkness throughout the day. Heavy rainfall contributes to this kind of a moist deciduous and dry deciduous type forest cover.


Tall teak trees, mango groves, gigantic creepers and bamboo thickets are a part of the Flora of Vansda National Park in Gujarat.


Many mammals like the Leopards, four-horned antelope, pangolin, rusty-spotted cats, jungle cat, civets, mongooses, macaques, barking deer, giant squirrel and hyena have made the Vansda National Park their home. You can sight them within the premises of this National Park. Many reptiles including 30 species of snake and the gigantic python are also to be seen in the Vansda National Park. The rare giant wood spider along with 121 other species of spiders is a part of the diverse Fauna of Vansda National Park, Gujarat.


The Vansda National Park is a haven for all bird lovers too. Great black woodpecker, Malabar trogon, shama, emerald dove, grey hornbill, racket-tailed drongo, paradise flycatcher, leaf birds, thrushes, sunbirds, pea fowls are some of the beautiful feathered creatures whose chirrup and clamor reverberates in the air of the Vansda National Park, Gujarat.
