BACK IN TIME

Rajkot is a relatively young kingdom carved out of territories seeded and captured by Thakore Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja, a scion of the Jamnagar Royal Family in 1620 AD. He was honored by territories and titles for coming to the aid of a beleaguered Mughal Empire on Gujarat. Rajkot was christened in memory of its co-founder Raju Sandhi. Thereafter successful Thakore sahibs consolidated their territory defeating the local Kathi tribes and skirmishing across the borders of Junagadh. This conflict with the Nawabs of Junagadh was to prove costly for a young Rajkot state.

Rajkot has been under different rulers since it was founded. Rajkot has a long history and had a significant part in the Indian independence movement. Rajkot was home for many personalities like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Rajkot is in a transition period of growing cultural, industrial and economical activities. Rajkot is the 26th largest city of India and the 122nd fastest growing urban area of the world.

Rajkot was the capital of the then Saurashtra state from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956 before merging in bilingual Bombay State on 1 November 1956. Rajkot was merged into Gujarat State from bilingual Bombay state on 1 May 1960. Thakur Saheb Pradyumansinhji died in 1973. His son, Manoharsinhji Pradyumansinhji, who has carved out a political career at the provincial level, succeeded him. He served as a Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for several years and as the state Minister for Health and Finance. Monoharsinhji's son, Mandattasinh Jadeja has embarked on a business career.

On 26 January 2001 a devastating earthquake centered near Bhuj, measuring 6.9 on the richer scale, struck the city.

MORBI

Morbi is known as ‘Paris’ of Saurashtra in Gujarat state of India.

Myth

It is fastest growing business hub of the state due to growth of vitrified tiles, mosaic tiles and such other industries in the belt. Thousands of labours get employment from this industry and live their life. It is also lifeline of Morbi city and without it, it can’t survive very well.

HISTORY

The city-state of Morbi and much of the building heritage and town planning is attributed to the administration of Sir Lakhdhiraji Waghji,[2] who ruled from 1922 to 1948. Sir Waghji acted as a ruler, manager, patron and policeman of the state with great authority. Sir Waghji, like other contemporary rulers of Saurashtra, built roads and a railway network (of seventy miles), connecting Wadhwan with Morbi and the two small ports of Navlakhi and Vavania, for exporting the state's production of salt and cloth. The Morbi railway station combines Indian and European architectural elements. Today, Sir Waghji Thakor's grandson Shivam Thakor is still the Prince of the state and resides in the royal palace.

Kumbhoki's fourth descendant, Kumbhoji IV, increased the size of the state by acquiringparganas such as Doraji, Upleta, and Sarai.

Sir Bhagwant Singhji, who reigned from 1888 until his death in 1944, was noted for tax reforms, compulsory education for women, and also for stopping the practice of purdah (female seclusion) at a time when the royal households of India were known for this tradition.

In 1901, Gondal city had a population of 19,592, and was a stop on the branch line between Rajkot and Jetalsar on the Viramgam-Rajkot and Rajkot-Somnath lines.
