About Anand

Anand District is an administrative district of Gujarat state in western India and is popularly known as Charotar. It was carved out of the Kheda district in 1997. Anand is the administrative headquarters of the district.


District comprises of 8 Talukas.


Anand is also popularly known as Charotar. Some of the villages of Borsad, Petalad and Anand talukas are located in this region. Known as "Golden Leaf", this region of charotar has the highest production of tobacco in Gujarat. In Gujarati, the world "Charutar" literally means a pot full of gold coins. The entire region is very fertile and productive.


The British rule came to an end on 15/8/1947 and India became independent. The new government integrated the royal states into the state of Bombay. Kheda district came into existence on 1/8/1949. Thereafter, some changes were made in the villages of certain talukas and villages were identified for different talukas of the district from 15/10/1950. The district of Kheda consists of Khambhat, Petalad, Borsad, Anand, Nadiad, Matar, Mahemdavad, Kapadvanj, Thasara and Balashinor talukas. State Govt. has formed six new districts from 1/10/97 and Anand has been carved out as a separate district from Kheda. The district of Anand comprises 8 talukas i.e. Umareth, Petalad, Sojitra, Borsad, Anklav, Khambhat and Tarapur.

The brave man that Sardar was, he guided the freedom struggle and liberated the country and went on to protect the integrity and unity of the nation. "Sardar" was born on 31st October, 1875 in Nadiad of Kheda district. His childhood was spent in Karamsad where his initial schooling and grooming also took place. Sardar's home is located in Karamsad.


Karamsad is located between 22.30 north latitude and 72.54 east longitude. It is situated on Anand - Khambhat railway line and Anand - Sojitra National Highway. It is the land of late Shri Vitthalbhai Patel and "Iron man" Shri "Sardar" Vallabhbhai Patel, the great freedom fighters and statesmen of India. Karamsad has contributed significantly during the freedom movement. Its name has been inscribed in golden letters in the history of India.

Monuments of Sardar Patel and Veer Vitthalbhai Patel have been erected in Karamsad at the cost of crores of rupees by Sardar Patel Trust to commemorate these two giant personalities of Gujarat.
